    Nationalist Chinese rebels, led by Sun Yat Sen, kick out the last Chinese emperor. A provisional govergnment was established and Sun was elected president, begining the period of the republic in China.

    After the assassination of their archduke, franz ferdinand, while on a diplomatic mission to Serbia, Austria declares war on Serbia in response, sparking a conflict that would bring the world into war as a result of the flawed alliance system.

    The US enters the war due to its ties to the allies in trade, the sinking of its ship, the Lusitania, by Germany, and the sending of the Zimmerman telegram, which promised Mexico US Lands, by Germany.

    The armistice is signed, enforcing a cease fire between troops until a treaty would be devised at the Paris Peace Conference following the Ally defeat of the Central Powers. The treaty was not an end to the war, however, and would have to be renewed every month.

One such revolutionary was Mahatma Gandhi, an Indian nationalist who promoted non-violent protest, one such form of protest being civil disobedience, in which the people consciously do not follow unjust laws and rules.

    Mustafa Kemal, also known as Ataturk, leads Turkey into becoming a republic, making some drastic changes from the previous legislation, such as the separation of church and state and abolishing the reigning monarchy. Kemal earned his reputation after defeating attacking Greeks attempting to take Turkish land after the fall of the Ottoman.

    Mao Zedong leads the communist party on the long march, a retreat in the Chinese civil war from the Nationalist party in which the Communists fled 6000 miles in order to avoid destruction. The death toll was very high. The turmoil in China was caused by disagreements within China as to which system of government should be used to lead China, democracy or communism. The war that ensued would result in the modern founding of the communist state of China.
