  • Calling of the Estates General

    The tax system was unfair to the poor and U.S. war put France in debt. The deteriorating economic and political situation in France caused Jacques Necker to call the Estates General after 175 years. The French people formed a three chamber parliament.
  • Voting Issues and the Tennis Court Oath

    The King locks the Natinal Assembly out of their usual meeting place. They have a meeting at a tennis court. They take the Tennis Court Oath to force a new constitution on the King.
  • The Storming of the Bastille

    The poeple of France were angry so they created a militia. They needed to arm themselves with weapons so they attacked the Bastille. French citizens are starting to have courage to fight back against their government.
  • The Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen

    The Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen was written by the assembly and gave everyone equal rights. It gave more freedom to the Third Estate.
  • The Women's March on Versailles

    Bread was scarce and the prices went up. Women marched to Versailles to demand bread. The King was alarmed and eventually gave in and delivered bread for the people of Paris.
  • Civil Constitution of the Clergy

    The Civil Constitution of the Clergy turned the Roman Catholoc Church into a government branch. The Assembly forced all clergy to support it. A clergy that did not take the oath, lost their clerical functions.
  • The King tries to escape

    The King and his family were held as prisoners in the Tuileries Palace. The revolutionaries were holding the King against his will, so he tries to escape. He was then seen as a traitor by the people of France.
  • France declares war on Austria and Prussia

    The revolutionaries thought that Austria and Prussia were planning on attacking France. Before anyhting could happen France declared war on them.
  • Attack on Tuileries

    The Tuileries Palace was getting attacked by the militias, because that's where Louis and the royal family was hiding out. Louis escaped to the Legislative Assembly and lost his status as the King.
  • Creation of the National Convention

    Louis was no longer King, The National Convention was created to make a new constitution.
  • The Execution of Louis

    It was the start of the Reign of Terror. Louis was exected for treason trying to flee France,
  • Creation of the Committee of Public Safety

    The Committee of Public Safety was created to keep the French Revolution alive through the citizens. Whoever was against it was executed.

    The National Convention voted the execution of Robespierre. Thermidorian Reaction begins as a revolution against the Reign of Terror.

    The Thermidorian Reaction was the revolution against the Reign of Terror. Leaders of the Committee of Public Safety were being executed.
  • Napoleon defends the National Convention

    The Tuileries Palace was getting attacked by counterrevolutionaries. Napoleon was given orders to defend the palace, he succeeded.
  • The Consulate is established

    The Consulate was established, formed by Napoleon and two other consuls. Napoleon basically wanted power without having the title of a ruler. France had a new government.

    The Pope and Napoleon made a deal to make the clergies of the Roman Catholic Church to be like nobles again. The Roman Catholic Church is now the main church of France.

    The Napoleonic Code gave religious freedom, jobs to the skilled and not because of heritage reasons. France had a better society.
  • Napoleon is crowned emperor

    Napoleon had all this power, so he declared himself emperor. As a result of this, the French Revolution comes to an end.

    France blocked Britain's trade connections with the rest of Europe. This turned the other countries against Napoleon.

    The throne of Spain was given to Napoleon's brother. This angered the people of Spain. Napoleon leaves an army in Spain.

    France and Russia had many disagreements so they end up going into war. Napoleon and his troops did not espect a huge russian army and the cold winter so he retreats back to France,
  • Battle of Leipzig

    France was agaisnt most of Europe, having no chance of winning,Napoleon surrendered. To restore peace in Euope, leaders get rid of Napoleon by exiling him to a small island called Elba.
