The Foundations of Computing

  • Babbage's analytical machine

    Babbage's analytical machine
A mechanical device similar to modern computer with a central arithmetic unit for calculating (a mill), an area for retaining numbers (a store) and methods for input and outpun.
  • Colossus

    Colossus
Collossus was built by Tommy Flowers and Max Newham. It was widely regarded as the first fully electronic, programmable binary computer.
  • ENIAC - Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer

ENIAC - Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer
It was the first general-purpose machine, that was completed in 1946 by Dr John Mauchly, and his student, J. Presper Eckert, at the University of Pennsylvania. It was used for calculating missile trajectories, to predict the weather and in range of other scientific applications.
  • The Manchester Baby

    The Manchester Baby
The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine, nicknamed The Manchester Baby, is regarded as the world's first stored-program computer. It had 17 instructions, and took 52 minutes to reach the correct answer.
  • Ferranti Mark 1

    Ferranti Mark 1
The Manchester Baby became the Manchester Mark 1, which in turn was a prototype for the Ferranti Mark 1, which became the world's first commercially available general-purpose electronic computer.
