The Evolution of the Training Profession

  • Systematic Approach

    Developed by Frederick Winslow Taylor, the systematic management approach to training was the observation of tasks, and modifying the meaningless time involved to cut down time. This approach was used to fill position and train individuals on equipment.
  • ATSD Formed

    Due to the realization that those in the field of training needed proper direction, the American Society of Training Directors was formed to mainstream their practices.
  • The introduction of Behaviorism in the Work Force

    B.F. Skinner introduced the concept of individualized instruction within the learning environment. This meant that instruction was broken up into smaller chunks and individuals were introduced to general developed information, and were required to provide active participation which displayed mastery of the content.
  • The Introduction of Technology

    Computers were introduced to provide the programmed material for individuals which created a sense of privacy and allowed learning to be self-paced.
  • Organization Development

    This organization created to specifically incorporate behavioral sciences, theories, individuals, and how teams work in order to successfully facilitate organizational change.
  • Socio-Technicals Systems

    This concept was developed to support the individual in relation to the technical tools that are incorporated in their training.
  • A Surge of Technology

    Due to the development of the PC computer, there was a surge in the use of technology within the training field.
  • The Increase of E-Learning

    Although electronic learning has proven to be impersonal, there was a heavy increase in its development.
  • Web 2.0

    A more socially interactive web design was developed in order to be more user friendly and provides a more social experience online.
  • Progression

    The field continues to develop and progress on a daily basis.
