The Evolution of the Computer Mouse:1964-2017

  • 1970

    1970
1970 was the year the mouse was patented. This was a big year because people started to discover it more, purchase it and it was a lot more easier for computer users. The idea made people start talking about the mouse, and when it was released people enjoyed it even more. This could be why the mouse is here today.
  • 1972-The next mouse

    1972-The next mouse
About 8 years after the first, Bill English created the "ball mouse" that we still have and use today (one of the most used today). Circuits in the mouse were also able to detect where it was moving. It was able to roll or move in any direction as well unlike the first one, so just in a couple years it improved. The one we use today is much more improved, but still based off of the first one. (4) (12)
  • 1964-The beginning

    1964-The beginning
1943, a very imporant time in history, the compter was invented. People were amazed that people could invent such an important piece in technoliogy that most of us use today to make it easier, in 1964, Douglas Engelbart created the first computer mouse. The "mouse" was actually called an X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System. He called it "the computer mouse" because the wire at the end reminded him of a tail of a mouse, and it was much easier then the real name. (1) (2)
  • Microsoft Intellimouse

    Microsoft Intellimouse
The Microsoft Intellimouse was first announced in 1996 (from Microsoft, of corse), and is a simple mouse, yet some people said it changed the mouse forever. It is a pretty straightforward mouse, and includes a download on your computer rather then a USB or a cord. Autoscroll was included in the mouse as well. It was an optical mouse as well. The regular Intellimouse was released about three years later. (7) (10) (13)
  • 1998-The USB mouse

    1998-The USB mouse
Apple created the "USB" mouse in 1998. You might think that because it's an Apple product, people would enjoy it, but most people claim that it was the worst thing they've ever created and don't like it that much. It is shaped like a hockey puck and people don't like it for that reason because it looks uncomfortable and might not feel good if you were to use it for work or any other computer activity. (6)
  • 1999-The light using mouse

    1999-The light using mouse
In 1999, the optical mouse was created by Microsoft. Before Microsoft created it, other people crated their own versions as well. It used/uses a light source (a light emitting diode). The optical mouse is not wireless like other mice, but has its pros and cons. The optical mouse has overrun the ball mouse almost completely, and today most of us use the optical mouse. (3)
  • The Moldable Mouse

    The Moldable Mouse
In the beginning of 2008, Lite-On released the thought of making a "moldable mouse". The moldable mouse would make it much easier to use for normal mouse users because you can mold it in a shape that would make it more comfortable for your hand, and wouldn't have to worry about purchasing a mouse that is uncomfortable. • Apple Magic Mouse

    Apple Magic Mouse
The Apple Magic Mouse was created by Apple in 2011. It comes with a USB to connect to the computer, rather then using a cord. Today, this mouse is very common and is still selling because it is smooth and easy to use especially with the USB. (7) (9)
  • Asus Vivomouse

    Asus Vivomouse
In 2013, the Vivomouse was created by Asus. It has a blue LED light and could as be used as a remote, touchpad or a mouse. It can be used on any desktop as well. It's easy to use because you can use it in so many ways and it seems simple. (5)
  • 2017

    2017
Now, in 2017, the mouse has improved and evolved so much. It went from a little block with a stick and a wire to a portable one, various colors and even more. There are amazing shapes and designs that nobody would've dreamed of in 1964. So many people have improved it so much more and will continue to. Many, many people sell them now. Today, most people use the optical mouse but their are many different types. Who would've thought that it could come to this and we could make it better?
  • The Computer Mouse Overall

    The Computer Mouse Overall
The computer mouse has helped people use the computer mouse more easily in so many ways, such as the moldable mouse and the Vivomouse. The mouse has had good versions and bad, but will continue to grow and change dramatically in future years, and might change the computer overall. The computer mouse has been a big event in history for people and will be remembered throughout history.
