    Jamestown has just been settled. It is an exciting place for new beginings. Every one wanted to be there in the New World, every one but the slave's. Slaves ,at the start of slavery, were treated like actual people. They were released after about 20 years of servace. If they were baptised they could become free. Slowly the English took away their rights. Slowly the English dehumanized them. Anthony Johnson was one of these slaves.

    On this day Anthony and his master went into the corn field. When they came out Anthony said he had gotten his own land. Finally he was free. This shows progress because slaves can become free after a few years of service. They can own there own land.They could work and play when they wanted. They were viewed in a higher social class and he could now make money.

    See to be sureThis law made it harder to get out of slavery. This law shows dimindshing progress. Now they are being kept in slavery longer and it is harder to escape. It gave the English men feel like they had more power over the slaves. Now the slaves have a scence of dependency.

    On this day a law was passed that when a slaved was whiped if he died from his wounds it would not be consitered murder because no one would want to hurt their own property. This is the first time slaves are viewed as property.This showed diminishing progress because now English men could kill slaves at will. This made the slaves fear the English men. it may have given them a sense of control.
