    Samuel Morse invented the telegraph, a machine that used electricity to send signals over wires. Morse also created a lange of dashes and dots to represent the alphabet, known as Morse Code. On May 24, 1844, he transmitted the first message over the telegraph.

Before 1860, the farthest point west that telegraph and railroad system could reach was St. Joseph, Missouri because people could not cross through the rough weather and terrain. On horseback though, young men were able to travel all the way from St. Joseph to Sacremento in 10 days. Although the Pony Express lasted for the short period of 19 months, it led to the creation of the transcontinental railroad.
