Pony Express
ABC Clio Pony ExpressThe Pony Express was the first transcontinental mail system. Before 1860, the farthest point west that telegraph and railroad system could reach was St. Joseph, Missouri because people could not cross through the rough weather and terrain. On horseback though, young men were able to travel all the way from St. Joseph to Sacremento in 10 days. Although the Pony Express lasted for the short period of 19 months, it led to the creation of the transcontinental railroad.
