Terrorism In American History

  • Boston Tea Party

    This event is not generally thought of as an act of terrorism. This was an event in which the colonist dumped pounds and pounds of tea off of a british ship in protest of taxation. Colonist felt that Britain did not have the right to tax them without representation in Parliament. Britain lowered the price of the highly desired tea and would frelly give it to the colonist, but the colonist purchasing it would recognize Britain's to taxation. Instead, they attacked the symbol of Britain's power.

    Colonial Terrorism

    Colonial Terrorism is the infancy of terrorism in the United States because America was indeed infant. This form of terrorism marked the idea that the colonies wanted to be free from British rule. Being of smaller force, many parts of the militia had to resort to terrorist tactics to see results.
  • Gnadenhutten Massacre

    Mass Murder of 100 Native Americans, mostly being women and children. This took place during the revolutionary war. The act was committed by American militia, and this was standard frontier warfare of the day. Today we consider it terrorism or even a war crime.
  • Fort Pillow Massacre

    Confederate General Nathan Forrest killed Black Union Soldiers at Fort Pillow. "The river was dyed," he says, "with the blood of the slaughtered for two hundred yards. The approximate loss was upward of five hundred killed, but few of the officers escaping."

    White Supremacy

    This time occurred just after the civil war. Racism and inequality was at the forefront of everyones mind. The problem did not exist previously because it was a genral notion that blacks were less than whites, evident by the slavery plaquing the United States at the time. The identity of terrorism changed in this tme because the slaves were now free and the terrorist were still unable to see them as equal. These indiividuals used violence to try and force their views on the entire country.
  • Wilmington Race Riots

    "The Wilmington riot followed an impassioned election campaign in which intimidation and fraud brought in a white supremacist government. Plans were drawn up before the election to coerce the Black voters and workers, and to expel the editor of the Black newspaper. Two days after the election, as whites began to execute their plan, the riot flamed. About thirty Blacks were killed in the massacre and many left the city. The white mob suffered no casualties."
  • Atlanta, Georgia Race Riot

    25 African Americans were killed and 100 others were injured. An angry gorup of white men moved through the city of Atlanta injuring and killing as many African Americans as possible. This was an interesting development considering Atlanta was always considered a very tolerant city up until that point

    Communism and Anarchy

    This era was based on a social aspect. The country was growing rapidly. This rapid expansion led to rebellion against the system, or anarchy. Also, a huge fear for communism had borken out throughout the nation and this became the main foucs of security.
  • Wall Street Bombing

    A horse drawn wagon filled with 100 pounds of dynamite was blown up across the street from the J.P. Morgan Inc. Bank. This attack killed 30 and inured 300.This attack was believed to have been carried out by followers of Luigi Galleani, an anarchist demanding the release of political prisoners.
  • Start of Japanese internment camps

    This is another poor example of response to potential terrorism. The government instituted a policy in which Japanese individuals and Japanese- Americans could be detained to minimze the threat of potential spies from Japan. This came as a result of a deep fear in communism.

    Domestic Terrorism

    This face of terrorism got much younger. This time span showed that the american youth became discontent with the direction of the country. This form of terrorism was meant to speak out against the government and its choices (Vietnam War).
  • Kent State Shooting

    This is reverse terrorism. Ohio National Guard fired shots into a crowded protest on the campus of Kent State. This incident killed 4 and wounded nine. This is a horrible example of how emergency management was used to respond to potential terrorism
  • Bombing at La Guardia air port in New York City

    Croation nationalist detonated in the La Guardia Air Port in New York City, killing 11 and injuring 75 patrons. The interesting part of this event is that after 35 years, no one has claimed responsibility or been brought to justice.
  • Hostages taken at the U.S. Ambassy in Tehran

    52 American Citizens taken hostage when Islamic militant students stormed the Ambassy at Tehran. These hostages were held for 444 days while Jimmy Carter served as President. The hostages were only released when Ronald Reagon was sworn into office. This illustrates the results of the differences in policy between presidencies.

    Right Wing Terrorism

    The ultra conservative phase in terrorism was marked by the changing of the President and again, the direction of the country.This era involved attacks such as abortion clinic bombings. These attacks fought against the left shift in the countries policies and ideology.
  • Abortion Clinic Bombing

    Matt Goldsby and Jimmy Simmons, members of a local church, had bombed an abortion clinic earlier in the year, and proceeded to bomb the new location on Christmas day, along with two offices. There were no deaths, but "the damages incurred by the three bombings were about $100,000, $225,000 and $100,000, respectively."
  • World Trade Center Bombings

    A car bomb was set off in the parking garages of the world trade centers. 6 people were killed and 1000 were injured. Al Queada was believed to have set the bomb. This was a prelude to the World Trade center Attacks in 2001.
  • Oklahoma City Bombing

    168 people were killed and hundreds more were injured when Timothy McVeigh planted fertilizer bomb in a van outside outside of a building in Oklahoma City. He was executed on June 11, 2001 for his actions.

    Global Terrorism

    This is the newest face of terrorism. As the world shrinks and countries and people groups interact on a more consistent basis, conflict arises. This form of terrorism directly affects the United States because we have become the largest entity in the world. This creates a target for our nation.
  • World Trade Center Attacks

    "19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania... Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City."
  • Anthrax Attacks

    Various anthrax attacks occurred over several weeks. These attacks killed 5 people and affected 17 others. Bruce Edwards Ivans who was a scientist in the government bio defense lab. He committed suicide on July 29 of the next year.
