Technology History Project

  • Lewis Nixon Invents the First Sonar Device

In 1906, Lewis Nixon created the first listening device that used sound to locate underwater objects. Later, in 1915, the French made a electric version to detect German U-Boats in the Atlantic.
  • Konrad Zuse Inventing the First Electric-Mechanical Computer.

Konrad Zuse created the Z1 in his parents living room. It is considered to be the first modern computer. His creation helped to spark advances in the new field of computer technologies.
  • HMS Rodney Being Fitted With type 79Y Radar

HMS Rodney Being Fitted With type 79Y Radar
HMS Rodney became the first capitol ship in the Royal Navy to be fitted with radar and other electric surveillance equipment, making her one of the most advanced ships in the world. She helped to pioneer the use of electrocute and computers for maritime use.
  • FORTRAN

In 1954, John Backus created the first computer language. It was originally developed to help scientist preform large calculations and balance equations, but it ended up becoming the mainstay form of programming for years.
  • Sputnik 1

    Sputnik 1
Sputnik 1 was the first man made satellite in space, Aboard, she carried numerous computers, and even basic robotic programming.
  • George Devol Invents the first digit operated robot

George Devol was a computer programmer who programmed this robot to function with internal programming. His creation proved to the world that robots are possible.
  • Apollo 11

    Apollo 11
The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) was a marvel of science. With only 1.024 MHz to work with, this computer with its advanced program allowed NASA to travel to the moon. Following the end of the space program, many of these computers became the basis for more advanced technology.
  • The MITS Altair 8800 Was The First Personal Computer

    Prior to this the MITS, computers were large and couldn't be used for day to day uses. However, the small size of this computer allowed it to be placed on top of a desk or table and for the first time, allow people to use computers to preform normal activities;
  • AN/SPS-67

Introduced on the Arleigh Burke class destroyers in 1988, it is one of the most advanced sensors on the planet. It runs on C-Band frequency between 5450-5825 MHz. The most impressive thing is its range and accuracy. Its max range is 104km (56.2 nmi) and is extremely accurate even at this range.
  • Robots working in Factories

    Robots working in Factories
Within the past 20 years, robots have become more and more prevalent as factory workers. Although less jobs are available, the people still working in these sectors are more educated and earn more. Robots preform the manual labor and increase efficiency, while the people monitor them and keep them going.
  • Curiosity Rover

    Curiosity Rover
Curiosity is a car sized rover that was sent to Mars on 11/26/11 and landed on 8/6/12. On board, it has equipment to analyze the atmosphere and to test the surface. Rovers like this have possibly replaced man as the new explorers of the last frontier.
  • iPhone Xs

The iPhone Xs represent the pinnacle of handheld technology. With retina sensors, face readers, and some of the most advanced AI on the planet, it is truly a marvel of science. Compared to computers from the 1990s, its staggering that it is only a 25 year difference.
