    1808 - The USA bans the import of slaves (Britain outlawed slavery all together in 1807)

    End of Slavery in Denmark (First Euro Nation to do so)
    Denmark becomes the first European nation to ban slavery and the trade. They had been very active in the past so others started to follow their lead.
  • Invention of the Cotton Gin

    Invention of the Cotton Gin
    Eli Whitney invents the Cotton Gin. He never profitted since the patent did not take effect before it was copied. Made cotton easier to produce which made the industry boom. Created a larger need for slave labor in the South.
  • End of Slavery in Great Britain

    End of Slavery in Great Britain
    William Wilberforce was the major voice behind endling slavery in G.B. He fought for almost 40 years. Britain then joined the global fight to end slavery after it banned it.
  • Amistad Trial

    Amistad Trial
    A group of improsoned Africans rebelled on a ship called Amistad. They were to be traded as slaves, but the trade had been illegal for a long time. The Supreme Court stated that they were free since the trade was illegal and they were within their rights to rebell.

    Enacted several changes and borders that diffused the conflict between slave states and free states. Also made the Fugitive Slave Law stronger.

    Part of the Compromise of 1850. It proclaimed that all runaway slave will be returned to their masters. This included slaves that made it to the North. Called the Bloodhound Act due to the dogs used to search for runaway slaves.

    Emancipation Proclamation
    This act by Abraham Lincoln freed all the slaves in the Confederate States. It ordered that all Union soldiers treat the blacks they encountered in the South as free people.
  • 13th Ammendment is Ratified.

    13th Ammendment is Ratified.
    Ammendement to the US Constitution that ended slavery in America. Freed all slaves in the country, North and South.

    The Emancipation RPoclamation in 1863 banned slavery in the South which the USA did not control at the time. In 1865 the Civil War ended slavery in May. The 13th Ammendment permanently and officially ending slavery was ratified in Dec. 1865.

    1964 - Civil Rights Act finally overrules all racist laws.

    This court case ended segregation in American schools as well as anywhere else. The Supreme Court stated that Separate but Equal was inheriantly unequal.

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Emmett Till was an African American boy who was murdered for aledgedly flirting with a white girl. This occurred in Mississippi where lynching was commonplacec. His mother had an open casket funeral to show the world what happened to him. This was contaversial and shocked many people. This was the partial influence for the book To Kill a Mocking Bird.

    Freedom Riders Movement

    African Americans rode interstate transporation to ensure that anti-segregation laws were being followed an implemented. The Government said it made is look bad to the Russians which only fueled the cause.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Assassination

    Dr. Martin Luther King Assassination
    Dr. King was Assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee. The man convicted of the crime was James Earl Ray. Although he vehemently preached non-violence, there were several violent riots in Chicago, Washington, DC, Baltimore, and others. Other civil rights leader tried to calm people, but the riots went on for 2 days. Many African Americans died, were injured or arrested. Many Businesses were looted or destroyed which damaged the economy of several black neighborhoods.

    Mauritania was the last country to ban slavery in 1981! BUT they didn't make it illegal until 2007. There are some who say it still exists there.
