The expansion of Russia continued under the rule of Peter and Catherine the Great. They wanted to have warm water for trade and to be closer to Europe, so they extended Russia.

The French wanted to take over Russia, but first they had to take over Moscow. While the French were marching hundreds of miles the Russian's burnt everything the French could use, even Moscow. They did this and the French suffered badly from lack of supplies and shelters.
