    The time period was called Time of Trouble did not end until Zemsky Sobor chose Michael Romanov as the new czar in 1613.

    Peter the Great became czar in 1689. Peter was an absolutist monarch who claimed the divine right to rule. Peter made a trip to the West a few years after become czar. When he returned he was determined to westernize, or Europeanize Russia.

    A long and hard war between Sweden enabled Peter to gain some of the lands he sought. In 1703 on a marshland on the Baltic Peter began the construction of a new city, St. Petersburg. This picture is showing what present day St. Petersburg looks like.

    In 1725 Peter the Great died, but he had made Russia a great military power. By the time of his death he had made Russia a important European state.
