Cassie goes to Strawberry and gets pushed around because she is black.She does not understand why everyone is so disrespectful to her.

Mama explains racism to Cassie and how white people think they are better than them. Uncle Hammer comes and almost attacks Charlie for pushing Cassie.

Cassie decides to pretend to fit the "slave" stereotype until she beats up Lillian Jean and threatens her.

Uncle Hammer gets the Logan family something for Christmas and gives Stacey a jacket, but he ends up giving it to T.J.

The Logan kids tell T.J. off after getting tired of his bullying.

T.J. begins hanging out at the Wallace Store and becomes a thief. T.J. is beaten up after breaking into a store.

Papa, Mr. Morrison, and Stacey are ambushed by the Wallace boys. Papa's leg is broken. Mr. Morrison beats up the Wallaces.

Papa starts a fire on the Logan land to avoid a lynching of T.J. and possibly the Logan's. The fire is put out and had eaten up a quarter of their cotton.

T.J. goes to jail and even though he wasn't very nice to Stacey. Stacey doesn't want him to go to jail. Cassie never liked T.J. but he had always been a part of her life. Cassie cries for T.J. and the land.
