Delegates gathered and they declared at the convention that the new party was opposed to the expansion of slavery into new territories and selected candidates to run for president.

Radical Republicans

The Radical Republicans wanted more aggressive actions to go against slavery from the government and they also wanted more vengeance toward the Confederates.

First try for President

John C. Fremont ran as the first Republican candidate for president. His slogan was "Free soil, Free labor, Free Speech, Free men, Frmont," He lost to James Buchanan.

Elephant is born

The elephant is the mascot for the republican party because it comes from a political cartoonist named Thomas Nast. In his cartoons he used animals to represent the parties and he used a donkey for the democrats and a donkey for the republicans.
