    French Directory

    The French Directory was the fifth government in France during the revolution. Under this government the middle class ruled using it's Consitution of 1795. It was headed by five dictators and 250 "ancients".
  • First Consul of the Consulate

    Napoleon was the first consul of his newly made governemnt. This position allowed him almost dicatoral powers over the rest of the Consulate.
  • Napoleon’s coup d’etat of 18 Brumaire

    This was a coup d'etat of the French directory. It was done by the growing power of the French military and was headed by Napoleon. This became the foundation for Napoleon's tyranny.
  • the Constitution of 1799

    This was the constitution of France that was made under Napoleon. It craeated the form of government known as the Consulate. The consulate gave almost all power to Napoleon so he could rule as a dictator.

    Concordat of 1801

    The Concodrat of 1801 was an agreement between Napoleon and the pope to bring back the Catholic Church to France. The agreement gave land back to the church, gave religious freedom for all, and put a check on appointed preists.
  • Code Napoleon

    These codes were put into effect by Napoleon to create a legal base for the french. It spells out laws and priviliges for the citizens regarding marriage, civil rights, child occupations, and religion.

    -lured the allies into a trap: Pratzen Heights Plateau
    -30,000 caualties on the enemy side
    -Ended with Treaty of Pressburg
  • Continental System

    a system of unfair taxes, tariffs, and embargoes that Napoleon placed on Britain. His hope was that this would hurt Britain and make France a decent compeition, but it had a negative effect instead of a positive one.
  • Peninsular War

    Caused the resources for Napoleon's troops to suffer tremendously. Nationalism increased among the spaniards. Started intense guerrilla wars. Napoleon was bitter against portugal for siding with British on the continental system issue and so he stormed his troops through spain into portugal. Spiraled out of proportion into a huge war.

    Invasion of Russia

    Russia began to turn on France, who they had been in allegiance with, and was going to Great Britain. Napoleon did not like this and decided to attack. Napoleon was able to conquer Moscow but the Russians tried to burn the city.. Napoleon attempted at bringing his army to Smolensk but it was winter so many died until there was not much left of the army. The Russians pushed the few remaining soldiers out. This is a great loss for the army of France and the beginning of the French Empire's decline

    Battle of Leipzig

    This was a battle fought during the Napoleonic Wars and is considered to be the largest battle fought in these wars. Napoleon was trying to take Germany but lost and because of his loss, Austria was able to keep control over their empire. Because of heavy losses during this battle, Napoleon lost many people and also this is considered to be the turning point of the Wars.

    The Hundred Days

    This is when Napoleon escaped from exile and attempted to rule France again and rebuild his empire. Louis XVIII was not doing a very good job as ruler so the people kicked him out of Paris right as Napoleon came back. He fought battles to try and win back his rule and empire but was eventually defeated at the Battle of Waterloo and sent back into exile.

    Battle of Waterloo
    This is during the time when Napoleon has come back from exile, the hundred days campaign, and is trying to regain his empire back. This is the last battle that Napoleon will fight in the Wars. Napoleon loses this battle to the Anglo-Allied Army and is forced to give up his huge army and France and is yet again sent into exile.
