Tariff of Abomination
After the war of 1812, Congress wanted to use protective tariffs. This Tariff raised rates on manufactured goods. The federal government and South Carolina arguing due to the South feeling like the Tariff took away their foreign trade (the rates were too high for them). War was starting to brew because of the tension between two. This led to passing a new bill that lowered the rates set by the previous Tariff. -
South Carolina Exposition and Pretest
The South Carolina Exposition and Pretest declared the tariffs unconstitutional and gave the American States the rights to void oppressive national legislation. -
Ordinance of Nullification
The Ordinance of Nullification declared that the tariffs were 'null and void' within South Carolinas borders. During the Ordinance, President Jackson criticized South Carolina and promoted unionism. Congress then created a bill called the Force Bill. This still did not please South Carolina. -
The Force Act
This Bill gave the President of the United States the power to use the power of the military to enforce the federal tariffs and laws. South Carolina did not like this Act. South Carolina knew they had lost against Jackson so they decided to back down and not go into any war. -
Clays Tariff Bill passed
Clays Tariff Bill provided a reoccurring decrees of 20 percent of the value of the manufactured goods that were imported so In the later years, the tariffs would be lowers. At the same time, Congress was started to use the military to force laws and tariffs.
