Nullification Crisis

  • Tariff of Abominations (Tariff of 1828)

The tariff imposed protections from European goods for the developing northern manufacturing industry, but it heavily damaged the agricultural South. Although the tariffs benefitted American industrialization, the South became unwilling to suffer for the North. This led to South Carolina vetoing the tariff under the guise of unconstitutionality and a threat of succession from South Carolina.
  • Hayne-Webster Debates

The Hayne-Webster debates were focused primarily on issues of public land policy, western expansion, and slavery between Robert Hayne, delegate of South Carolina, and Daniel Webster, delegate of Massachusetts.
  • Proclamation to the People of South Carolina

The Proclamation was made by Andrew Jackson in response to the Nullification Ordinance enacted by state officials of South Carolina. He listed the reasons why he opposed it and why it was a horrible idea. One of the main reasons for Jackson's opposition was because the Nullification Ordinance threatened succession from the United States, disrupting union and potentially starting a civil war.
