    Tunisia became a French protectorate
    Tunisia was conquered by the Ottoman Empire before 1881, but they had a high autonomy. Afterward, the Berlin Congress offered France the control of Tunisia. The French protectorate of Tunisia lasted until 1956. The French authorities left the framework of local government intact, but devised mechanisms to control it. In some ways, France offered a protection. Through the about one hundred years, they didn’t have that high autonomy. It has a big influence on Tunisia.

    The Algerian War of Independence, otherwise known as Algerian War. It was a war between France and Algeria. This war began on November 1, 1954. It was started by members of the National Liberation Front. The conflict began for political, territorial, and religion reasons.     This day is when Tunisia changed into a republic country. It changed the form of the country. That’s also when Habib Bourguiba took office. He is the first president of Tunisia. He established a strict one- party state. He dominated the country for 31 years. He was establishing rights for women unmatched by any other Arab nations. This is the beginning of modern Tunisia.

    Hassan II became king of Morocco
    Hassan II became king. He was born in Rabat, Morocco on July 9, 1929. There were two attempts on his life during his reign. He died on July 23, 1999 in his hometown, ending his reign. He was valued for his ability to mediate between two countries. Morocco engaged in a very brief war, known as the sand war, with Algeria to try to reclaim some lost territory. His son, Muhammad VI, succeeded him upon his death.

    The presidential elections were held for the first time in Algeria on september 15, 1963. Ahmed Ben Bella was the first president in Algeria to be elected. He was an Algerian socialist soldier and revolutionary before he was elected. Most of Ahmed Ben Bella’s time was spent rebuilding Algeria.     Moroccan King sent troops
    The Moroccan King, King Hassan II, sent around 350,000 unarmed troops into the country now known as Western Sahara. He claimed that this territory belonged to Morocco. Western Sahara was under Spanish rule until this event known as the Green March. It got its name from the flags that the unarmed soldiers were holding to represent Islam, which is represented using green. Spain eventually left the area and the Moroccans took control over it; although, it is seen as its own country.

    Spanish disestablished Western Sahara
    Western Sahara is a rather small territory/region in North West Africa. Despite it’s small size, the region has had a lot of conflict. In December 26th, 1884 Spain colonizes the region of Western Sahara. This made the area a Spanish province in 1934. Although it was under Spanish control the Spanish disestablished in February 26th, 1976. The Western Sahara is an extremely hot climate making it very sparsely populated, in-fact, its one of the least populated places in the world.

This Civil War was an armed conflict between the Algerian government and Islamist rebel groups. The United States and France supported the Algeria government.     In 2006 all of the U.N. members did not recognize sovereignty of Western Sahara from Morocco. Then, in November of 2009 Western Saharan activist, Amintou Haidar, went on a hunger strike for indigenous Sahrawi rights. Also during that time Morocco declared an illegal annexation of Western Sahara. The U.S. senate had a majority bipartisan vote against this annexation.     On August 9, 2012, Libya picked its first president. His name is Mohammed Magariaf. He served as the president of the General National Congress. He was well known for having founded and the party against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. The party took power from the National Transitional Council. Before this, Libya never had a president. They had king and chairman. This is an important point for Libya.
