    Hitler tried to gain power in the congress, this time getting 37% of the votes. Was able to gain the majority of the seats in the Reichstag
  • Hitler was nominated chancellor

  • Reichstag Fire

    Expelled and imprisons the communists from Parliament. He announced that the country was in danger from the communists during the election campaign. This encouraged many to vote for the Nazis, who were seen as anti-communist. Hindenburg declared a state of emergency using the Weimar Constitution - newspapers being censored, personal letters and phone calls being checked. Seen as the start of the end of democracy in Germany.
  • Enabling Act

    Hitler now had the power to issue new laws without consulting Parliament. The Enabling Act (The Law for removing the Distress of the People and the Reich) gave Hitler the power to issue emergency decrees without the approval of President Hindenburg.

  • Night of Long Knives

    Night where 250-1,000 people were killed, mainly SA members. The SA leader Rohm was killed as well.
