At first, France was winning, but then the British came to Spains' help and stopped the invasion by France. Throughout this, most people in Spain continued to fight and refuse to join the French even if they would die.

Napoleon was forced to push troops further into a city, which he succeeded at, but there were more troops surrounding the French from all sides. Because of this, Napoleon had no choice but to retreat and bring his troops back. During their retreat, a bridge was blown up, and most of the retreating troops had been trapped in the city of Leipzig.
