    Thomas Jefferson

    Died: July 4, 1826
    Party: Democratic-Republican
    Term: 1801-1809
    Age when inaugurated: 57
    Famous Facts:
    Considered the most brilliant President, he wrote the Declaration of Independence, founded the University of Virginia, and was an architect, a farmer, and a scientist. Jefferson approved the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which nearly doubled the size of the U.S.

    Famous Facts:
    Lincoln led the Union into the Civil War to preserve the nation and end slavery. He was assassinated just five days after the Confederate armies surrendered.

    Famous Facts:
    Roosevelt led the nation during the Great Depression of the 1930s and to victory in World War II (1941–1945). He also greatly expanded the size and role of the federal government through his New Deal social programs.
