  • Mustafa Kemal is sent to handle civil war in Anatolia.

    Significance #5: Mustafa Kemal, commander of the Ottoman Empire, was sent by the Sultan to handle the rebellion. However, instead of stopping the movement, he slowly became the leader of the movement. This is important because it is the first step of Mustafa Kemal moving iincreasing his power in Anatolia.
  • Greece invades Turkey.

  • Ataturk is terminated from his position in the Ottoman Empire.

  • The Congress of Erzurum

    Significant #4: A meeting was which stated that no privileges that might impair Turkey's political sovereignty would be granted to the Christians. This is the first moment where the new Turkish Government is negotiating about the faith of the new republic.
  • Mustafa Kemal and his forces move to Istanbul

  • Grand National Assembly to convene for the first time.

    Significance #3: The Assembly included members of the Ottoman parliament as well as representatives of local resistance groups. The government was put to a halt. The local resistance groups wanted Mustafa Kamal as their President. This is the first time that Mustafa Kamal was officially declared President.
  • Treaty of Serves is signed.

  • Mustafa Kemal and his forces move to Istanbul

    Significance #1:Mustafa and his army entered Istanbul where the British forces were located and they successfully took the city. The sultanate became less impactful as people began to realize Mustafa as the leader.
  • Armistice of Mudanya is signed.

  • Assembly Abolish Sultanate.

    Significance #2: The Grand Assembly terminated the sultanate and divided the caliphate. As a result, the caliphate lost its political power and instead became a religious authority. This gave Mustafa Kamal all the power, making him the leader of Turkey
  • Mustafa Kemal becomes the first President of Turkey.
