    The Beginning 1821
    In 1821 Mexico would get what is currently Texas, New Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Mexico was able to get this land after gaining independence from Spain. After this event the first immigration would occur; Mexicans would begin traveling north to their new land. Shortly after the Texas Rebellion the Mexican War, and the Gadsden Purchase would lead to Mexico losing their land to America. This leads to the current immigration we see throughout time.

    1848 Treaty of guadalupe Hidalago
    The Treaty of Guadalupe which ended the mexican amereican war was signed on Feb. 2, 1848.This treaty granted the U.S the land that is now known as the states of California, Colorado ,Nevada ,New Mexico ,Utah , And Whyoming and along with that mexico gave up its cliam to Texas as well. Then the new border that seperated the two countrys was desided to be the Rio Grande.
  • Literacy Requirment

    This was a requirment that was imposed to immagrants that were enterin the country. They were for those who were over the age of 16 and could read some of the english language , must be able to rad about 30 to 40 words to show they are capable of reading. And for those who were thrying to enter the U.S. , trying to avoid religous processcution did not have to pass the tesst.

    In 1917 the Immagration Act was passed by congress that was intended to restrict immagrants of "undiserable" from other countries. This would restrict them from earnign a living in the U.S. A tax of $8 a head was imposed on immagration, except those under the age of 16 accompany by parent , and for those over the age of 16 who had not paid for there ticket were prohibited from entering the country. This act was entended to tighten the restriction on those entering the country.

    The Great Recession started shortly after World War I. It resulted in bad economics and high unemployment rates. Since there was no jobs Anglos began to get anti-Mexican feelings and started to deport Mexicans in order to help out the situation. Some of the Mexicans decided to leave America on the own so they would not be embarassed. Goverment officials came up with the Immigration Act of 1921 in order to slow down immigration, but really it was in order to buy time for another law to be passed.

    The U.S Borders Patrol was created in 1924. This brought forth the term Illegal Aliens also the new law now stated that undocumented workers were considerd fugitives. After this all people of mexican decent were looked at as possible illegals and second class citizents who were discriminated on.

    The Great Depression hits and the economy tanks. Causing a extreme amount of work,and food shortage through out the nation. Thee angalo americans sought and found a scape goat for the depression ''mexicans''. During this time any people who looked mexican or lationo were deported regardless if they had citizentship or not. They tryed to scare off the people latino of decent by public lynching or police brutality to fleeing back to mexico.

    In 1942 the U.S enters the second world war. And since there was a high percentage of men in counrty being shiped off to join the war effort,then there was a high damand of jobs all over the U.S.So the U.S opens its borders to mexican immgrant workers for algacultures through the bracero program.This program went onfrom 1942 to 1964 brinmging in millions of new mexican immmgrants. Which caused alot of problems to the mexican-americans already establish in the U.S.
  • Operation Wetback

    Operation Wetback
    After World War II, the need for immagrant workers had decreased because of the soliders coming back home. A recession followed after the war ended and found the need to not have mexican workers anymore. In 1954 created operation wetback which lead to the discovery of thousand of undocumented workers that were deported back to mexico. Police swarm into the barrios in order to find them. Some were sent on plane to the south so it wuld prevent them from coming back north.
  • Farm Workers Union 1962

    The Farm Workers Union was started by Cesar Chavez in order to get better working conditions for Mexicans. One of the ways Chavez and the workers tried to get their message across was by boycotts and strikes. However the owners countered by bringing in immigrant workers to fill in the vacancy through the Bracero Program. Chavez and the union did not want more immigrants coming to America and were opposed to the Bracero Program.
