    Why was this game important to you?It was and still is important to me because it’s one of the first games I remember playingI played it often with my family, especially my aunts when there was a family gathering during Thanksgiving and ChristmasStarted up my collection. I now own many different versions of monopoly, monopoly junior, and some other spinoffs of it, and I still collect them when I see one to my liking.

    Risk Assessment – Knowing the pros and cons of an action or choice which enables you to choose a better course of action for that situationTerritory – Purchasing or owning pieces of land and area to establish something as theirs

    Risk Assessment – Money. When there is money, there is risk assessment. In Monopoly’s case, money is needed to both buy land and houses, but also needed to pay other players when stepping on their land, so you have to use money wisely. Territory – Buying property and then having others pay you when they land on one of your properties. The ability to add houses and hotels to increase the monetary value of that property emphasizes this.

    Why was this game important to you?
    This was one of the very first video games I can remember playing.
    My uncles brought their NES system in for me to play with during Thanksgiving and I had a blast with it.
    I thought the gun technology was brilliant and the gameplay addictive
    For me, this is still one of the games that I remember most fondly when I think back on childhood games played.

    Aiming – The ability to pinpoint a target
    Physical Coordination – The ability to use your eyes and body in unison successfully

    What game mechanics taught these skills?
    Aiming – You aim the gun at the screen in order to shoot the ducks flying by
    Physical Coordination – You must use your eyes to aim, but then you have to actually move your hands and the gun to shoot. Not only do you have to shoot one, but after the first one, you must aim again quickly and shoot the second one.

    Why was this game important to you?
    This was another one of the first games that I’ve played.
    My friend and I played this game over and over and over during the summer.
    This was the game that really taught me the joy of co-op, and even till today, I prefer playing co-op with my friends instead of solo or against others.

    Timing – The ability to perform an action at a precise moment

    Pattern Recognition – Recognizing boss attack patterns in order to dodge attacks and fight back
    Timing – Precise jumping and attacking times in order to maximize efficiency in running. In some cases, messed up timing would result in a fall, or possibly a death.

    Why was this game important to you?
    This is one of my childhood games, and probably the one I’ve sunk the most time into.
    One of the first games where I actually spent a lot of time trying to improve and beat the game, rather than just playing it and putting it down when it got too hard.
    Donkey Kong Country was fun, but Donkey Kong Country 2 was definitely the most memorable one for me and the one that sparked my passion for challenging games and platforming games.
    Also it had Dixie Kong.

    Timing – Performing an action at a precise moment

    What game mechanics taught these skills?
    Reaction Timing – Enemies and a dynamic environment meant that more than just jumping from platform to platform, players would have to react to approaching dangers by either jumping or attacking accurately and precisely.

    Timing – Platforming and defeating monsters requires correct timing for jumping and attacking in order to survive and reach the end of the level.

    Collection – Gathering items, usually to try and complete a set.
    Arithmetic – Using numbers for basic mathematics, such as addition and subtraction.

    What game mechanics taught these skills?
    Collection – Pokemon! Gotta Catch ’Em All! One of the basics of any Pokemon game is to try to collect all the Pokemon out there, and the trading card game is no different. In addition to collecting the cards you want for your deck, it was an equally important goal to obtain all the unique Pokemon cards you could, especially if they were foil cards (shiny).

    What game mechanics taught these skills?
    Arithmetic – Attacking would cause the opponent’s Pokemon (and sometimes your own Pokemon) to suffer damage, while using potions and certain skills would recover your health. Items to increase/decrease damage, and the final goal of collecting all 6 prize cards for the win all include arithmetic to calculate.

    Why was this game important to you?
    Like most others of my generation, I was captivated by Pokemon when it came out.

    I was also a big fan of card games, although up till that point I hadn’t truly played any trading card games.
    It was like the best of both worlds, plus I had friends who were more than willing to play with me and play we did, well into our teens.
