    Manifestdestiny is the belief shared by many Americans in the mid1800s that the U.S. was meant to expand across the Pacific Ocean. They believed it was their right by God.
  • 13 Colonies

    The 13 colonies were formed when the Americans fought for their independence from Great Britain in the American Revolution. We were a new independent nation, and we had a weak economy. Our freedom was declared with the Declaration of Independence.
  • Northwest Territory

    The northwest territory consisted of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. We gained this land with the passing of the Northwest Ordinance.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The U.S. purchased this land from France for $15 million. We purchased this land so France could no longer block westward growth, or control trade along the Mississsippi River. With the gain of this land, the size of the U.S. almost doubled.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty

    The Adams Onis Treaty was an agreement between Spain and the United States, which helped us gain Florida. Americans, specifically southerners, were upset because Native Americans were aiding their run away lsvaes and rading their towns.
  • Texas Annexation

    Americans moved to Spanish Texas because they were promised cheap and free land, and were permitted slaves, which they were told wouldn't change. However, they became upset with Mexico's government, so they became a Republic, until they became a state of the U.S.
  • Oregon Territory

    Americans originally shared control of the Oregon Territory with Great Britain. To avoid conflict with them, but wanted control, so we signed a treaty to gasin complete control of these states, which includes midern Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and part of Montana.
  • Mexican Cession

    Mexico disagreed with the Texas Annexation, so they cut off all diplomatic ties with the U.S.Also, they ordered settlers to leave California and banned farther American immigraton, and Americans sent to dispute border region. This lead to the Mexican-American War, which was ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe. Under the Mexican Cession, we gained California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorodo and Wyoming. It increased the size of the United States by almost 25%.
  • Gadsen Purchase

    The Gadsen purchase included Arizona and New Mexico, and costed the U.S. $10 million. Americans agreed to purchase this land because they would gain many beneifts from it, and they were also trying to avoid further conflict with Mexico.
