Library Bootcamp 2015 Reflection

  • Arrival & Housing Check-in

    Arrival & Housing Check-in
We received an email from Joan, telling us that the registration was happening at the "G" Lounge at the BHSU campus apartments. Since we hadn't read that email yet, we started at the Student Union but it was closed. I needed a restroom break...urgently, so I looked for a building that appeared to have cars in front (maybe leading to an unlocked door.) The Science Lab building saved the day. Then it was time to check emails, to find the correct location of registration. Thank you Joan Upell!
  • Boot Camp 2015 Welcome

    Boot Camp 2015 Welcome
It was time for Introductions & Logistics. I was VERY EXCITED to hear about the new online masters program with the emphasis on library! I am making plans to complete it.
This would have been a nice time for the attendees to get to know each other bettter too, but we did introductions later, at the Sanford Lab, so it was fine.

  • Learning & Teaching

    Learning & Teaching
I love that we received a free kit that we can use in our classrooms! The "Private Eye" kit gives us a tool to encourage students to look around and think about what they see..up close!
  • Dinner & Genius Hour

    Dinner & Genius Hour
Eating on-campus was so convenient! The food was great and the food service staff was very friendly. :-) By eating together, we could start using the "Genius Hour" idea right away. We began to get to know each other and share ideas. I love trying out new ideas, apps, programs, etc.!
  • Lunch Break

    Lunch Break
Lunch in the BHSU Student Union was very good! We must have been the only group eating that day, so they had us use plastic disposable plates. They served delicious soft-shelled tacos, salad bar, etc.
  • Pre-Test

    Pre-Test
This on-line test, in combination with the post-test later, is the tool the state library is using to demonstrate growth (the workshop's effectiveness). The test was a good way to help us begin thinking about what we were going to be learning and discussing during the workshop. I was able to take the test on my iPad Mini.
  • Pure Genius Book Talk

    Pure Genius Book Talk
Wettrick, Don. Pure Genius: Building a Culture of Innovation and Taking 20% Time to the next Level. Print. --- We were going to be able to see the author, via Skype, but he ditched us to go to Africa with his students. I don't blame him, IT'S AFRICA! Oh well, we had a nice discussion about the chapters we liked best, and what inspired us from the book. It is a very positive resource for keeping education interesting and not letting the school mandates bog down enthusiasm.
  • Dinner at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Grill

Dinner at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Grill
The evening treat was the food and conversation at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Grill. The food was superb, but the service was clearly unable to accomodate our group of about 20. They didn't bring drink orders, they didn't track who got what meal, or deliver them timely, and they were completely flummoxed when it was time to give out the checks so people could pay and leave. Yikes! But the food was so good and the conversations wonderful, that the evening was worth it. :-)
  • Travel to Lead

    Travel to Lead
We travelled from Spearfish to Lead for the tour of the Sanford Underground Lab. Problem was, we couldn't find the Sanford Underground Lab. We finally found the Sanford Visitor Center though.
  • Breakfast

    Breakfast
Once again, the food was perfect! The BHSU campus is blessed with a beautiful Student Union! I'm glad we got to enjoy it too :-)
  • Digital Resources & Exploration

    Digital Resources & Exploration
4-hr session: Jane Healy and Danielle Loftus. They each covered such wonderful material! I learned that the on-line LearningExpress Library and Gale Virtual Library are resources we should be using for the 4th & 5th graders. It opened my mind to the idea of encouraging teachers to use the Gale Virtual Library as a resource for themselves while planning their lessons. Danielle gives us so much information, so quickly, that I've found I need to video it! :-)
  • Lunch Break

    Lunch Break
Whew! We were ready for this break; and the food was great!
  • Sanford Underground Lab Tour & Session

Sanford Underground Lab Tour & Session
Julie Dahl & Peggy Norris did a great job with the slide presentation, tour, and session on how we can teach with more STEM activities to spark interest in students that will lead them to careers in the STEM fields.
  • Breakfast at 8 AM

    Breakfast at 8 AM
Fewer people were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at breakfast this morning...too much fun last night, maybe. :-) More than one borrowed a cup of coffee for the morning session. :-)

  • STEM Resources & Projects

    STEM Resources & Projects
Excitement grows when students can discuss and think about common interests. Once kids are excited about something and allowed to expand that thinking into new directions, things really get interesting!
  • STEM & Reading

    STEM & Reading
Dr. Faye LaDuke Pelster & Dr. Kathleen Matthew demonstrated how learning is language, even in the STEM disciplines. We completed a tree lesson, including some wonderful children's picture-book read-alouds, a tree rubbing & measuring project, and poetry writing session.
  • Instructor Guided Project Time

    Instructor Guided Project Time
This was a great time to be able to work and ask questions. It really helped us clarify what the project expectations are. We solidified our project topics so we could then focus on what resources we need to curate.
  • Dinner & Genius Hour

    Dinner & Genius Hour
It really works well to have meals together and be able to continue the conversations about projects and new learning! :-)
  • Breakfast

    Breakfast
It's hard to believe this is the last morning for the group to be together. We're starting to feel the pressure to get our projects going, but this is big stuff. :-)
  • Post-Test

    Post-Test
Growth in our knowledge is the goal, but the growth keeps going and going. We are life-long learners trying to grow more life-long learners! :-)
  • SDMy Life

    SDMy Life
Megan Lahr gave us a terrific overview of the online career guidance tools that are current and relevant to our SD students. It includes statistics about careers in SD that give students the current salaries, needed education, education institutions that are the best routes to the student's desired careers. We even got to take the learning style inventory, like students would do. This tool is not very applicable for elementary students, unless we can use some of the career presentations.
  • School Library Summit

    School Library Summit
11:00 AM - 3:00 PM (including the sack lunch provided by SDLA)
I like the idea of including technology people in our conferences, but I worry that the core library skills are losing emphasis. Technology can be a tool or a distraction, if it isn't used correctly. The One Book program should include books for all age levels, including the teenagers. Regional mtgs Wed. PM in Rapid.
The voting process for the Prairie Bud and Pasque contest made it easier for students to vote for their favorites.
