Lauren's Science Journey

  • First Grade

The teacher made green eggs and ham for Dr. Seuss' birthday. She had us make predictions about what ingredient made the eggs green. Her admiration for Dr. Seuss is something that I have adapted. I collect his books for my personal library and share some with my students.
  • 7th Grade

I built a model of a cell. It took forever and my learning didn't transfer, but I worked really hard on it! Learning about moving models in science this summer really allowed me to reflect as to why this assignment isn't as useful for students.
  • 9th Grade Biology

I dissected a frog and had a ton of hands on learning this year! The teacher was very memorable and had a turtle tank in his classroom. This has solidified the idea that hands on learning makes an impact with students.
  • 11th Grade Physics -- Egg Drop

My group's was the only egg that didn't crack after being dropped from the roof of the gymnasium. This was a very memorable project! It was great to understand why some designs worked and some didn't. My group decided to design a "nest" for the egg.
  • 12th Grade -- Human Anatomy

I was so excited for this class, but it turned out to be independent study in the back of the room while the teacher taught a 9th grade biology class. I hated the idea of reading chapters in a book and answering the questions on my own. There were only 5 of us in the class and we sat in the back while the teacher taught another course. I ended up dropping the class and taking Spanish instead.
