John Jr.'s Programming Timeline

  • Classes to take in September: Welcome to high school John! It's awesome that you already have an idea of what you'd like to do this semester. This semester, I'd recommend beginning the programming pathway to get a better understanding of the basics.

  • Period: to

    September-June

  • Now that you've taken the class for a month, you can start to see the aspects of programing you do and don't like. If web-design is what you're still interested in, I would approach your teacher about it and find more ways to gain experience.

  • After you've gotten a better understanding of what you'd like to specialize in, it would be a great time to study up on it. Research topics most important to your interest on sites like Khan Academy, or Mackinvia.

Links to these sites are available at www.harrisonhighschool.org under the student resources section.
  • If you're feeling confident in your abilities, now would be an excellent time to showcase that to potential mentors! I would recommend talking to your teacher again and finding local businesses with internship programs. Feel free to introduce yourself!

  • Now that you're aware of local jobs and internships in web-design, I would start to look for clubs and organizations that specialize in that industry. Some great ways to find organizations are through your local chamber of commerce or CCSD site.

You can find more information on these opportunities at CCSD.org or CobbChamber.org
  • After looking into different organizations, I'd recommend exploring them. Attend one to two meetings at each program before you make a decision on which to join. You have plenty of time to find one or two programs that fit your needs.

  • Once you've joined an organization, make sure you stay active in it. Attend all mandatory meetings and all informative meetings that you can. Organizations are only worth it for you if you put a fair amount of effort into them.

  • Now that you've been a member of this organization for a month or two, start to look at ways to promote it, grow it, or become further involved in it. Research a leadership position you'd like in the program and work towards this positions requirements.

  • Since you've been working in this organization and learning more at school, you have a decent amount of knowledge in web-design, and with all the free time this summer, look into interning at one of the businesses you previously talked to.

  • After interning for a month at a local business, you should be making excellent progress and impressing a lot of people in your community. For the remainder of this summer, keep up those connections even if your internship has ended.
