Ivan becomes the Grand Prince of Moscow in succession to his father's death of body inflammation. Ivan becomes ruler at only three years of age. His mother ruled as a regent until his age of 8. The community they ruled grew into choas with the rival families arguing over her leadership.

Ivan IV was crowned tsar of Muscovy. A tsar is an emperor of Russia (before 1917).

Ivan appoints a council of advisers. With their help, he inputs self-government in rural regions, reformed tax collection, and instituted a stable code of laws and church reformation.

Following his first wife's death in 1560, Ivan went into depression and became much more irritable. Assuming the boyars had something to do with her death, he left the throne to hunt them down. Over the next 24 years, he continued this reign of terror by murdering anyone who seemed like a traitor.

On this day, Ivan the terrible let his health get to him and caused his death. His awful rule would leave Russia in a hole deep so that it wouldn't be revived until centuries later.
