  • Control Of Jerusalem

    The United Nations partitioned the British-controlled Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. Arabs rejected this idea, when Israel declared independence the Arab states attacked. Isreal defeated. The control of Jerusalem was then divided between Jordan and Israel.
  • Six Day War

    After Arab relations between Jewish Israelis and its Arab neighbors got worse. After Egypt sends away peacekeepers and prepares its army, Israel launches a surprise attack. Syria, Jordan, and Iraq join the fighting. Israelis captured East Jerusalem and the West Bank from Jordan, Gaza and Sinai from Egypt and the Golan Heights from Syria.
  • Maintained Settlement

    Israelis have created and maintained settlements: Jewish communities within the Occupied Territories of the West Bank and Gaza. Although this practice is considered illegal, Israelis expand these settlements, believing rightfully belongs to the Jews.
  • Yom Kippur War

    On Yom Kippur, Egypt and Syria launch a surprise attack on Israeli. After initials gain by Egypt and Syria, Israel repels both armies and a cease-fire is declared. Israel later withdraws from parts of Sinai and the Golan Heights.
  • After Yom Kippur War

    Following the Yom Kippur War, After Egyptian president Anwar Sadat’s surprise visit to Jerusalem, US President Jimmy Carter brokers peace between Egypt and Israel. Egypt becomes the first Arab nation to recognize Israel, and Israel withdraws from the rest of Sinai.
  • the Intifada

    angered by Israel’s continuing occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, Palestinians begin an uprising, with stone-throwing youths attacking Israeli soldiers. The first suicide attack on civilians in Israel occurs in 1989- lasts through 1990.
