Israeli & Palestinian Conflict

  • Period: to

    Partition of the British

United Nations voted to partition the British. The British then controlled Palestine into Arab and Jewish states. Arabs leaders rejected this partition. Six Arab states attacked on May 1948, when Israel was to declare its independence. Israel defeats the Arab armies and enlarges their territory. The control of Jerusalem had been divided between Jordan & Israel.
  • Six Day War

Tension between the Arabs and the Jews grew, and had gradually gotten even worse as time went on. After Egypt had sent away the United Nations' peacekeepers, & while they'd been preparing their armies, Israel took action of a surprise attack. Other countries join the fight. (Syria, Jordan, and Iraq) However, Israel decimates all the Arab forces. Israelis captured East Jerusalem, the West Bank from Jordan, Gaza & Sinai from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria.

    The Illegal Agreement

Israelis have created and maintained settlements. (Jewish communities within West Bank and Gaza) This practice is considered illegal, however, the Israelis expand these settlements b/c they believe that these Occupied Territories rightfully belong to the Jews. These communities are surrounded by safety zones. (They're places where the Palestininans aren't allowed to farm & there are specific roads that Palestinians are not allowed to use.)
  • Yom Kippur War

On Yom Kippur, the Jewish holiday, Egypt & Syria make a surprise attack on Israel in Sinai & in the Golan Heights. Israel withdrew its armies and its people from Golan Heights. Egypt and Syria agreed to a cease-fire & to remain peaceful.
  • Peace & Harmony Bewtween the Rivalries?

Things were beginning to calm down. Signs of peace were starting to be noticed & being accounted for someting other than violence. The President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, made a surprise apearence to Jerusalem. The US President, Jimmy Carter, had broken peace between Egypt and Israel. Egypt became the first Arab nation to recognize Israel. Israel then finally withdraws from the rest of Sinai, completely.
