    Parliament Formed

    The parliament of Ireland was then officially established in 1297.
  • Jan 1, 1484

    Poynings Law

    The Poynings Law restricted the powers of the Irish Parliament in 1484 and gave the English control over it.
  • Restrictions Removed

    In 1782 the Irish politicians removed the restrictions on their parliament.
  • Autonomy

    In 1792 the Irish parliament had more autonomy and extended the vote to catholic majority
  • Act of Union

    In the 1800s The Act of Union abolished the Irish parliament and put it in the hands of Westminster.
  • Westminister Elections

    In 1918 Westminster held elections and elected its first Dáil Eireann
  • Declaration of Independence

    They ratified the declaration of independence on January 21 1919 although the British government did not recognize the Dáil Eireann
  • Irish Free State

    The Irish Free State was established in 1922, this provided a range of measures for direct democracy.
  • Referendum

    On July 1 1937 the first ever referendum was held in Ireland.
  • Constitution of Ireland

    The constitution of Ireland introduced a directly elected President and could only be amended by referendum. Which it has since 21 times.
