    The boy in a striped pyjamas is a novel by John Boyne. It is about Bruno and his family who lives in Germany during the Second World War. The book describes the reality of concentration camps during World War II and gives us a reminder to never forget what happened.
  • The family move from Berlin

    The family move from Berlin
    Bruno and his family have to move from Berlin to a smaller town in the countryside (Auswitch), which bruno calls "Out-with". This is because Bruno´s father got a job as a commandant of a concentration camp. Bruno was not happy with this and he had to say goodbye to all of his friends and move from his big house. Bruno, his sister (Gretel) and his parents moves in to their new house and it is next to the concentration camp, his father's working place

    Bruno is bored, he decides to go and look for someone on his age and check out the area. He gets eye on a large green fence and people walking around inside. That must be the concentration camp, he thought.

    Bruno meets a boy on the other side of the fence. His name is Shmuel and he wear a pyjamas?.. Bruno and Shmuel continues meeting often and they became good friends. For the first time, Bruno visits the concentration camp and he is shocked by what he sees.

    Bruno´s father gets promoted and this gets consequences. the family have to move to a new house closer to the concentration camp. Bruno ask his father what the people with the pyjamases on the other side of the fence does, and why they even wear pyjamases. His father told him that the people inside the fence, are just working there an that Bruno can not trust them or talk to them.

    As soon as the family moved in to the new house they hired teachers. They teaches them basic subjects, but they also learn about the Jews. Because of that Bruno- and Gretel´s dad is an nazist, they learn about how evil and awful the jews are. Bruno do not understand the seriousness and begin to talk to the maids that the family hired to clean their house. The maids are Jews and therefore Bruno was not able to talk to them, even though he tried, but his father stopped him.
  • Moving home to Berlin?

    Bruno´s dad told Bruno that they were going to move home to Berlin again. Bruno went back to the place where he had been meeting Shmuel for the past year to tell him he was going home the next day. They planned one last adventure, to go exploring and to find Shmuel´s father who had been missing.

    Since Shmuel´s father is missing, Bruno decided to help him searching. His father is missing inside the camp and they wants to find him. Bruno gets a striped pyjamas from Shmuel and uses it to sneak into the camp with Shmuel. They went into the camp together, but got caught by soldiers..

    After Bruno and Shmuel tried to find Shmuel´s father, they got taken by the soldiers. And it turned out that the soldiers took them to a gas chamber. This was common during the Second World War, the prisoners were told to take a shower, but it was actually gas chambers with poisoned gas.

    By the time, Bruno´s family finds out that he is missing. His father goes to the concentration camp to look for him. The whole family are desperately searching for many days. But sadly, they can not find him.
  • All hope is gone

    After a few days, the family finds out what happened with Bruno. His father gets frustrated because he realized that he was a part of it.
  • Start over

    After everything that happened with Bruno's death, the family decided to start over again. They packed up all their belongings and left their home next to the concentration camp. They wanted to move home to Berlin and forget everything in "Out-With".
  • Open ending

    The book has an open ending, because the author wants the readers to imagine the family's future. After all the World War II ended in march 1945. We can imagine that the family were safe back home in Berlin. Even though the family lives in grief, they have to move on.

    The book ends with: "And in silence, behind the fence, there were hundreds of people just like this, wearing such striped pyjamas and unable to visit or leave." This describes how terrifying and sad the history about the Jews was. It was mass murder and they used gas chambers to kill them in the concentration camp. All in all around 1,2 - 1,6 million people lost their lives in Auswitch.
