    Mohammad Ali was known as the father of Modern Egypt. He encouraged the people that it was time for Egypt to become more modern. He was the man who seized power from Egypt in the year 1805.   • British Colony of Singapore founded

    British Colony of Singapore founded

    Great Britain, under Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles founded a new colony under the name of Malay Peninsula also known as SIngapore. Britain then wanted control over the next kingdom to fall, Burma. They wanted to control Burma inorder to protect their possessions in India.

    War Between Mexico and the United States
    This war was between Meixco and the US over territories and Independence. The Americans belived in Manifest Destiny, which started all of this. The war lasted from 1846-1848, and Mexico was defeated and also lost at least 1/3 of its original territory. Source

    Great Rebellion AKA the First War of Inderpendence
    After several hardships with the British and their concepts, for example the caste system, India developed a sense of distrust towards the British. Especially, when some discovered rumors of how sacred animals, like cows, were dismantled and treated like dirt, deliberatingly disrespecting the Indian culture. All this lead to a war until June 20th, 1858.

    The Suez Canal was opened up by an entrepreneur named, Ferdinand de Lesseps. The British took an active interest in Egypt after the Suez Canal was opened. Believing that the canal was its "lifeline to India", Great Britian sought as much control as possible over the canal area.

    King Leopold II was the real driving force behind the colonization of Central Africa. Leopold's claim to the vast territories of the Congo aroused widespreadbconcern among other European states. Leopold ended up with the territories around the Congo River.

    European states had been content, especiall in Africa and Asia, to set up a few trading post where there materials could be traded amoung. Imperialism was tied to Social Darwinism and racism. Some people took a more religious approach to imperialism amd others believed Europeans had a moral responsibility to civilize primitive people which was called the white man's burden.

    France seized the city of Hanoi and later made the Vietnamese empire a French protectorate-a politcal unit that depends on another government for its protection. They extended their control over Cambodia, Annam, Tonkin and Laos.

    kingAfter the French conquest of Indochina, Thailand was the only remaining free state in Southeast Asia. British and French rivalry threatened to place Thailand,too, under colonial rule. Two remarklable rulers were able to prevent that from happening. King Mongkat promoted western learning and maintained friendly relations with the major Europenan powers. Eventually Britain and France agreed to maintain Thailand as an independent buffer state between their possessions in SE Asia.

    During the Spanish-American War, United States naval forces under Commodore George Dewey defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay.     People in Southwest Asia were unhappy witth being governed by Western powers. Resistance to western control took form of peasant revolts. Under colonial rule peasants were often driven off land to make way for plantation agriculture. Early resistance movements failed, overcome by western powers.
