    Britain started importing opium to China and to show their discontent the Chinese threw cartons of opium into the water. The Europeans demaded compensation and China fought back.

    Treaty of Nanjing
    It was signed at the end of the First Opium War and it granted Britain many ports and money in compensation for the opium.
  • The Crimean War

    The Crimean War
    France and Russia disputed over control over a religious site near Jerusalem.
  • The Second Opium War

    The Second Opium War
    The Chinese were discontent with the treaty conditions and they failed to satisfy British goals of improved trade led to this war.
  • The Sepoy Rebellion

    The Sepoy Rebellion
    The Sepoys found out cartridegs in India were sealed with beef and pork and rebelled. It took a year for the British East India Trading Company to defeat them, but it led to a rise in India nationalism.

    Matthew Perry forced trade Japan which leads to internal fighting. The Shogunate is overthrown and the Meiji Emperor is restored.
  • The Berlin Conference

    The European leaders gathered together in Berlin and decided how to carve up Africa. Leopold II who was in the conference was after the Congo Free State

    The Boxer Rebellion
    A small group of Chinese that believed they were invincible rebelled agains the Europeans in China.
  • Open Door Policy

    Open Door Policy
    The States esltablished this policy proposed to keep trade with China open to all countries on an equal basis to keep one country from dominating the country.
  • The Suez Canal Crisis

    The Suez Canal Crisis
    Rights to the canal were held by the British and French, but the Egyptian President Gamal Nasser nationalized the canal and it was closed for 8 years leaving 14 ships trapped and it didn't reopen until 1975
