The Berlin Conference's overarching goal was to eliminate conflict for territory in Africa and to regulate trade. Almost every European country exept for a few attended the conference. This helped so that there were not as many wars between the Europeans, -
Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii
She was the last monarch in the Kamehameha dyanasty. Anti monarch insurgents wantted to annex Hawaii to the US. Eventually the US did anex Hawaii and the queen was put out of power. The reason they wanted the annex was because she was a bad ruler. She did not renew a treaty with the US that her brother made. -
Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa
King Menelik II warded off the Italians by creating a uniform army. He later became the leader of Ethiopia. Ethiopia was one of very few African countries to remin independent. -
Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and the Philippines taken from Spain
During the Spanish-American war Spain lost a lot of territories in the war. The 3 territories lost inclued Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Phillippines. To this day we still control Puerto Rico. -

After the Dutch started colonizing they were called the Boers. The natives did not want them to colonize so they faught them in a war. -
Most of Africa is under European control
By 1914 most of Africa exept for a few countries are under European control. This means the new major religion is Christianity and the culture was lost to be European culture. But it was not all bad, the literacy rate, sanitation and lifespan all rose. Also the Europeans brought hospitals and schools. The economy grew also.
