    I was born in Dublin, Ireland. I lived a decent childhood up until the great potato famine, a period of mass starvation, death, and emigration. My family wanted to move to the U.S. not for land, or money but to be safe. We hard started our journey west in the beginning of April when I was about 16.
  • Journey to the states

    Journey to the states
    We began our trek in early April just as spring was around the corner. We had heard news that the war in America was over and they were now rebuilding. It was the perfect time to for my family to get jobs and free land. I had a decent sized family about two brothers and three sisters. We didnt want to move from Ireland, but we didnt want to die either. The journey on the ship was relatively boring. You didnt do much other than get sea sick, eat, sleep, and occaisonally played with other kids.

    We finally arrived at Ellis Island, but more importantly we arrived in the U.S. The station were immigrants went was so full there was thousands and thousands of people waiting to get in so they can live their lives. We waited for hours until it was our turn. Just waiting in line was nerve racking and exhausting. We had to get a check up; height, weight, see if we were carrying diseases, and then they would ask us just some background questions. It wasn't much of a big deal, other than it was...

    Kind of an inconvience for us since we had been waiting for hours. I noticed we hadn't been treated poorly like the chinese immagrants. I take it Americans didn't like the Chinese. It didn't matter to me as long as we were'nt treated poorly.
