1802-Ohio outlaws slavery
Slavery was abolished in Ohio by the states original constitution. But at the same time Ohio with slave-state Kentucky across the river, took the lead in aggressively barring black immigration. Ohio was some of the first states to abolish slavery. -
1803-Ohio became a state
The state of Ohio celebrates Ohio statehood on March 1. The reason for this is because the Ohio general assembly met for the first time on this day in 1803. In reality, Ohio became a state on February 19,1803, when president Jefferson endorsed the United States Congress's decision to grant Ohio statehood. -
1812-the war of 1812
Some British soldiers were on American soil in Ohio and Lake Erie. They were also trading guns with the native Americans helping the natives to resist the advance westward of white Americans. This helped the Americans win the War of 1812. -
1832-Ohio and Erie Canal opened
The Ohio legislature voted to fund the project and construction commenced. It was fully completed in 1832 and traveled 308 miles through 146 lift locks on its path between Cleveland and Portsmouth Ohio. The canal almost instantly turned Cleveland into a major commercial center. -
1850-Compromise of 1850
When the compromise of 1850 went into effect, many Ohioans vehemently opposed it. The fugitive slave law of 1850, requiring the federal government to assist southern slave holders in recapturing their runaway slaves. This compromise had to also deal with California becoming a state and if it was a slave state. -
1852-Uncle Toms Cabin published
It was published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1852, she became an abolitionist in the 1830's when she lived in Cincinnati,Ohio. Cincinnati was located on the Ohio river, just north of Kentucky, a slave state. Her book convinced many northerners that slavery is immoral. -
1859-John Brown led raid on Harpers ferry
John Brown was born and raised in Ohio. In 1848 he formulated a plan to incite an insurrection, he had 22 people including 5 black men, and 3 of his sons. This event made any accommodation between North and South nearly impossible. -
1861-The start of the Civil War
Ohioans played an important role in the war effort, they provided 3 types of military units: artillery units, cavalry units, and infantry units. Ohio supplied the federal government with more than 260 regiments of men. A total of 310,654 Ohioans served in the union army. Ohio men fought in every major battle of the war, they also helped secure Kentucky and West Virginia. -
1870-John D. Rockefeller created his standard oil company
In Ohio Rockefeller had an oil company that would unite with other oil companies that would be the standard oil company. This caused Ohio to be major trade center with oil and there would be lots of income. The standard oil company created multiple oil companies throughout the country, Rockefeller directed all of these businesses. -
1879-Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb
Edison invented the light bulb and caused Cleveland to become the first city in the world to be lighted electrically by lights. He was called " the wizard of melanoma park he also invented the phonograph that was used to Cleveland. After 5 years Thomas Edison shared his inventions with the world and we use some of them to this very day. -
1900- Harvey Firestone comes to Akron
Firestone established the Firestone Tire and rubber company in Akron, it grossed more than 100,000 dollars in profit. In 1903 the company began to manufacture rubber, and in 1904 it started to develop pneumatic tires for automobiles. The following year the company produced more than 28,000 tires and made more than 1,000,000 worth of tires. -
1903-Orville and Wilbur Wright complete the first successful flight of a powered plane
Only 5 Ohio newspapers covered the story originally because the others refused to believe that flight was possible. The wright brothers tried multiple times typing to get an airplane to fly and eventually it worked. They eventually got it to fly in Kitty hawk, North Carolina and it flew for 120 seconds. -
1917- Camp Sherman for World War 1 established
It became a refugee camp and the third largest in the world. It was named after the famous Ohio civil war general William Tecumseh Sherman. Before World War 1 ended more than forty thousand soldiers had received training at Camp Sherman. -
1929- The Great Depression began
In 1933, more than 40 percent of factory workers and 67 percent of construction workers were unemployed in Ohio. Industrial workers who retained their jobs usually faced reduced hours and wages, these people had a different time supporting their families. Many of Ohio's city residents moved to the countryside, where they hoped to grow enough food to feed their families. -
1937- The Ohio River Flood of 1937
In Cincinnati the flood was eighty feet, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois faced serious problems. Also gas tanks exploded and oil fires erupted on the river, parts of Cincinnati remained under water for 19 days and electricity and water were in short supply. The Ohio River caused more than twenty million dollars in damage. -
1940- Ohio helps win World War 2
Approximately 839,000 Ohioans, roughly twelve percent of the states population in 1940, served in the armed forces during this conflict. Tens of thousands of people also flocked to Ohio seeking jobs in defense industries. Goodyear aircraft corporation which produced airplanes, both prospered during the war.
