World network

Timeline of the Internet

  • Merit Network was formed

Was created to investigate resource sharing by connecting mainframe computers
  • ARPANET was established

was an early packet switching network and the first network to implement the protocol suite TCP/IP
  • USENET was established

USENET is a worldwide distributed discussion system available on computers. It was developed from the general-purpose UUCP dial-up network architecture.
  • Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System (DNS)

Is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols.
  • TCP/IP was officially completed

Defines rules and conventions for communication between network devices
  • AOL was founded

It originally provided a dial-up service to millions of Americans, as well as providing a web portal, e-mail, instant messaging and later a web browser following its purchase of Netscape
  • The World Wide Web (WWW) was invented

  • Tim Berners-Lee founded HTML

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the standard markup language for creating web pages and web applications.
  • Gopher system was released

The Gopher protocol is a TCP/IP application layer protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet
