    Creation of Israel
    LINKThe head of the Jewish Agency proclaimed the establishment of Israel and President Truman recognized it as an independent State.
  • Arab-Israeli War of 1948

    Arab-Israeli War of 1948
    LINK Arabs refused to recognize the resolution that created Israel, which sparked conflict between Jewish and Arab groups in Palestine. The Arabs' goal was to block the partition and prebent the establishment of the Jewish state while the Jews' goal was to gain control over the territory allotted to them. Eventually formal armistace agreements were made in February 1949.
  • The Sinai Campaign

    The Sinai Campaign
    LINKIsrael made an agreement with France and Britain to invade Egypt in order to remove the blockade aroung Eilat port and regain control of the Suez canal. France and Britain were pressured out of the deal by the US and Soviet Union, so in turn Israel was forced to pull back even though its attack was successful.
  • The 6-Day Way

    The 6-Day Way
    LINKEgypt sent forces into Sinai and blockaded port Eilat again and called for Arab action against Israel. Israel launched its airforce and in six days took control of Sinai, Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and Jerusalem.
  • October War

    LINKEgypt and Syria launched a coordinated attack on Yom Kippur that took Israel by surprise. Egypt attacked across the Suez canal but ISrael crossed to the West of the Canal and a ceasefire was agreed upon. The Syrians tried to take Golan Heights back but were forced back by the Israelis.

    LINKA treaty gave Sinai back to Egypt and Egypt agreed to recognize Israel.
  • First Intifada

    First Intifada
    LINKOpen revolt broke out in the West Bank and Gaza because the Palestinians there never reconciled themselves to Israeli rule following the 6-Day war.
  • Oslo Agreement

    Oslo Agreement
    LINKThe Palestinian National Council wanted to end terrorism and settle an agreement which called for Isreal to withdraw from the territory captured in the 6-Day war. The declaration of principles that was agreed upon stated a 5 year transitional period in which Israeli forces would withdraw and a Palestinian Authority would be set up.
  • Second Intifada

    Second Intifada
    LINKIsraeli withdrawel began but was denounced by many Israelis and Palestinians and didn't take hold. The militant Islamic group Hamas led the Palestinian opposition and the revolt was dominated by suicide bombers that killed dozens of Israelis. In turn Israeli counter-attacks killed dozens of Palestinians and by 2000 Israel reoccupied the West Bank.
  • Gaza Withdrawal

    LINKThe new Prime Minister of Israel decided to leave the Gaza strip, and built a wall and fence to defend against suicide bombers.
