History of Computers

  • Calculating Clock

    Calculating Clock
The first recorded mechanical "calculator clock" was made by Wilhelm Schickard. It 's important because it was able to multiply large numbers and even though that sounds pretty basic to us to day, it was a building block that led into the inventions of other technology. Before this there were calculators that could add and subtract, but being able to multiply was a greater feat.

  • Telegraph

    Telegraph
The telegraph machine and system was invented in 1831. This is important because it was a whole new idea and was much more efficient and quicker than the traditional post services such as the Pony Express. Information could be set and recieved so much quicker.

    Telephone
The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. This was a step up from the telegraph system invented just 45 years earlier and once again it made communication easier and quicker than before.

    Transistor Computer
In 1957 the first transistor computer is made by the Atlas Guidance Computer company. I think this event is important because it not only effects the community of technology but it efffects the world. The computer is used to control the launch of a missile called the Atlas.
  • Mini-Computer

    Mini-Computer
The company DEC presents the first mini-computer called the PDP-8. Not only is this significant because it's the firsst mini-computer but it also only costs $18,500. That sounds like a lot, but for the time period it was unbelievable. Just five years earlier the PDP-1 was priced at $120,000. Yeah, that's a huge price drop. When prices drop like that the products become more popular becuase more people are able to buy them.

    Apple
The first Apple computers are built in the garage of Steve Jobs family and are made by Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak. The first Apple computer made is only a wooden box with a circuit board inside. Apple has come a long ways since then obviously. I think this event is important becauase it shows how technology starts. It starts from a humble beginning in someones garage and can grow to be a billion dollar company that sells products to the World.

  • iPad

    iPad
One of the last and most important events to mention is the release of the Apple iPad. I think it is important because it is a totally redesigned computer that was made into a tablet and it becomes a huge success. It's crazy to think about how the first Apple computer was a wooden box, and now they are small, portable computers that can do so much more than I'm sure anyone imagined the first time they looked at that wooden box,
