The Louisiana Purchase was a transaction with France that was signed on April 30, 1803. The United States doubled in size by purchasing 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 million. Approximately around 4 cents an acre. -
The War of 1812 (The Second War of Independence) was fought between the British empire & the United States. The war was fought primarily over the impressment of American sailors by the British Navy. The war ended with signing of the Treaty of Ghent at the end of 1814, with neither side losing or gaining significant amounts of land. The U.S. did weaken the power of Native Americans, increased American nationalism&pride, &recognized military heroes who would later go on to serve in public office. -
Kept immediate balance in the senate by allowing Missouri to be inducted in the Union as a slave state while inducting the territory of Maine as a free state. Also by stating that any new state admitted south of the 36-30 parallel would be a slave state. Any new state created about the parallel would be a free state. -
Authorized the removal of Native Americans who lived east of the Mississippi River to lands in the West. Indian territory was modern-day Oklahoma, and was planned to move Native Americans there. The Trail of Tears resulted from this which was forced marches of various tribes. Almost 1/4 of the 18,000 Cherokee people died on the march due to disease, hunger, and harsh weather. -
The Texas Revolution (Texian War of Independence) officially began on October 2, 1835 with the Battle of Gonzales. The war ended on April 21, 1836 with Texas claiming victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. The victory resulted in Texas securing independence from Mexico. The famous slogan from this war is "Remember the Alamo". The Treaty of Velasco negotiated the resolution to the revolution. -
Thousands of perspective gold miners traveled by sea/land to San Francisco, California and the surrounding areas, after a discovery of gold nuggets in Sacramento Valley in early 1848. By the end of 1849, the population of California territory went from less than 1,000 to around 100,000. $2 billion worth of metal was extracted from the area. The Gold Rush peaked in 1852. -
Began in 1861 after decades of tension between the North & South over slavery, slavery rights, and westward expansion. Once Lincoln was elected in 1860, 7 southern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America, 4 more joined soon after. The war ended in Confederate surrender in 1865.This was the costliest and deadliest war fought on American soil which resulted in about 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed, tons injured, and the South left in ruins. -
On September 22, 1862, Abraham Lincoln released the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which stated that as of Jan 1, 1863 all enslaved people in the states currently engaged in rebellion against the Union will be forever free. This only applied to enslaved individuals in the Confederacy, and not to those in the states that remained loyal to the Union. -
Effort to mend Southern states from the Confederacy and approximately 4 million newly freed people into the United States. Newly freed people had to integrate into the social, political, and labor systems. -
The 13th amendment was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865 and was ratified on December 6, 1865. This amendment abolished slavery in the United States. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865 at Ford's theatre in Washington, D.C.
