  • Stonewall Riots

    Stonewall Riots
    A series of riots againts gays and policeman in the New York area.These homosexuals were facing harsh times. They wanted peoole to see that homosexuals and hetersexuals where the same. The Stonewall Inn was a place where homoseexuals were welcomed, but also owned by the mob. Police where known to raid gay bars in the 1960's and thats what they did at the Stonewall Inn and got out of control
  • Homosexuality as a Disorder

    The American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders.
  • Activists in Miami Florida

    Activists in Miami, Florida pass a civil rights ordinance making sexual orientation discrimination illegal in Dade County. Save Our Children, a campaign by a Christian fundamentalist group and headed by singer Anita Bryant, is launched in response to the ordinance. In the largest special election of any in Dade County history, 70% vote to overturn the ordinance. It is a crushing defeat for gay activists.
  • The March of Victory

    The March of Victory
    About 75,000 people participated in the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Washington, D.C., in October. It was the largest political gathering in support of LGBT rights to date.

  • Reagan's Aidsgate

    Reagan's Aidsgate
    Mostly gay men had aids and they where dying. There was no funding to finding a cure. They wasn't funding a cure because it started with only gay men. President Reagan turned his back on the funding and to million people dying. He wasn't caring or wanting to fund money into finding a cure.

    Defines one women and one men can only get married. This act was signed into law by president Bill Clinton. It was very much voted by congress. The act didnt enforce same sex marriage. Under the law same sex marriages where not looked upon because of federal purposes.

    Ellen DeGeneres Comes "Out"
    Ellen came out and said "I am speaking for my own truth". People were shocked but some people where glad she came out, mostly the gay community. She was brave and told people on national television and magazines. She was expressing her sexuality to the world.
  • Vermont Leading the Way

    Vermont becomes the first state in the country to legally recognize civil unions between gay or lesbian couples. The law states that these “couples would be entitled to the same benefits, privileges, and responsibilities as spouses.” It stops short of referring to same-sex unions as marriage, which the state defines as heterosexual

  • New York Passes Same sex Marriages

    New York passes a law to allow same-sex marriage. New York is now the largest state that allows gay and lesbian couples to marry. The vote comes on the eve of the city's annual Gay Pride Parade and gives new momentum to the national gay-rights movement. The marriage bill is approved with a 33 to 29 vote. Cheering supporters greet Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he arrives on the Senate floor to sign the measure at 11:55pm, just moments after the vote.

    Three states won the right to same sex marriage. Which where Maine, Maryland and Washington. Same-sex marriage was legalized by the majority vote in three states. This is not only a clear reflection of popular opinion, but also an indication of progression in the fight for marriage equality.
