During the festival proceeding the marriage between Alexander's sister and the Molossian king, Philip II was assassinated (in the theater of Aegae). This was done by one of his personal body guard (Pausanias) as a result of a personal grudge, though there are some indications that more people were involved and/or new what was going to happen.

This is considered Alexander's first major battle. During a northern campaign, Alexander received word that his Macedonian troops had been forced out of the Greek city, 'Thebes'. Alexander and his men swiftly arrived at Thebes and massacred those within. This sent a harsh but effective warning to nearby states which may have been considering a revolt.

The Battle of Issus (5th November, 333 BCE) was Alexander the Great's second battle against the Persian army and the first direct engagement with King Darius III, near the village of Issus in southern modern-day Turkey. It was a major victory for Alexander, defeating the Persian army and causing Darius III to flee the battlefield.

The siege of Gaza was essential in the campaign to conquer Egypt. After this battle, Egypt fell with relative ease and little resistance.

At age 32, Alexander the Great dies. The cause of death is debated with generally two perspectives: He died of malaria or of poisoning (through the consumption of wine mixed with white hellebore a deadly white-flowered plant).
