Haitian Revolution

  • Thesis Statement.

    Many across the globe would remember the Enlightenment or Haitian revolution, but in different aspects. For slaes, the Haitian revolution brought a successful route for future natives. For the French, it brought a trail of hatred for the loss. The Enlightenment and The Haitian revolution mix and are caused into each other with laws, famous leaders. and small wars.

    Locke created laws of the citizens.
    A citizen is born with life, liberty, and property. Even slaves are granted with the laws of a citizen. In the Haitian Revolution, slaves learned and found the laws of the citizens. These laws, enabled in the Enlightenment, helped cause the slaves to revolt (Popkin).

  • Rousseau publishes the Social Contract

    Rousseau publishes the Social Contract
    The Social Contact stated that the government worked with the people and not against them. This also states that anyone has a right to back out and create their own government. Even if this was seen as a type of rebellion, slaves and wise leaders use their advances of the Social Contract to have a successfull revolt (Popkin).

    The American rule, written in a scroll, was taken in the time of the Enlightenment. Thomas Jefferson to old intelligence from Locke and used it for the United States. Lockes idea of natural laws affected all corners of the world during the Enlightenment period. The Enlightenment influences cultural, religious, governmental policies toward different countries during this time (Popkin).

    Toussaint Louverture used this abolition source to control. The workids included ideas on the freedom of will, the invalidity of slaves, and sympathy towards a violent revolution. Louverture knew where he stood in the point of control in the revolution, and he used the sympathy of control to overpower Rigaud. He read this right before the attacks in Saint Domingue (Haitian Revolution).

    In 1789, the French Revolution started. With Haiti being a small country, it didn't have much influence or power on other leading countries, like France or Germany. Slaves located in Saint Domingue were forced to work for the whites. In the French Revolution, white skinned people were found mistreating the slaves especially through out the revolution. When the French Revolution started, this cause a slight change in the slaves and how they had to work. Influenced revolt (Revolution).

    Raimond, joined with other comissioners, traveled to receive first-hand information and help restore the island. Gens de couleur had victory but whites in Saint Domingue were enraged and would not follow the wanted decree. Whites enjoyed the captive power they had over Africans and gens de couleur (Haitian Revolution).

    Saint Domingue was put under as a well flourished colony of France. L'Ouverture ruled slaves as a community. A nationalistic point of view entered their heads. Even though the slaves had diverse locations, enslavement brought slaves together. Their form of community kept Saint Domingue prosperous until Napoleon invaded again (Popkin).

    Toussaint Clause
    Toussaint L'Ouverture created his own independent policy for the people and slaves of San Domingue. His new government included social morality, public education, civic pride, and racial equality. With the Haitian Revolution being the only successful slave revolt, L'Ouverture gave the slaves access to a normal life, and that was seeing in the eyes of a white. Being educated and having equality was rare to anyone less than white (ON THE ENLIGHTENMENT’S ‘RACE PROBLEM’).

    Toussaint L'Ouverture addressed counterarguements to André Rigaud. These attacks were over the control of the Haitian Revolution. Not only did Rigaud retreat, L'Ouverture led the revolt against the country who exiled gens de couleur, France. Mixed colors were removed fromantic country and L'Ouverture and slaves had their own defense method, and that was winning a racial war (ON THE ENLIGHTENMENT’S ‘RACE PROBLEM’).
  • The Leclerc Expedition

    The Leclerc  Expedition
    Charles Leclerc worked under Bonaparte. Leclerc sent forces to reassert control over the slave rebellion. Toussaint L'Ouverture was captured and deported. Now removed from France, L'Ouverture led the slaves to destroy the French. Slaves managed to defeat the ones who controlled them (ON THE ENLIGHTENMENT’S ‘RACE PROBLEM’).
