  • Haiti becomes a French colony

  • Slave rebellion begins

    Haiti realized if other contries are gaining their own freedom then why shouldn't they? So they began to uprise.

  • Legislative Assembly gave full citizenship to people of color.

  • Haiti is in war with the England colony called Jamaica because the white upper class disagreed that people of color should be free so they ganged up with britain to get rid of the rights for the slaves.

  • Sonthonax delares freedom for slaves.

  • Freedom for slaves is ratified by the French National Convention.

  • Toussaint L'Ouverture joins with French Republic.

  • Toussaint L'Overture declares himself Govenor for life.

  • Napolean sends Leclerc (brother in-law) over to solve all of the problems with the freed slaves.

    Napolean doesn't want freed slaves because that means less money for him and he is already in a tight situation over in France and he needs more money so that is why he sends Leclerc over.

  • Leclerc sends Toussaint to France and he dies in prison in France.

    What was supposed to be a peacful meeting to discuss their opinions on slavery turned into Toussaint being in prison in France leaving Haiti without a leader.

  • The war with Great Britain leaves Napolean broke so he is forced to sell the Louisiana Territory to Great Britain.

  • Slavery was not yet abolished but yellow fever plagued Leclercs troops. Rochambeau (Leclercs son) then takes charge of Haiti.

    Yellow fever killed off most of Leclercs troops and killed him as well leaving a big advandtage for Desaline (the new leader of the slaves) but then Rochambeau takes charge.

  • Desaline acheives Haiti's freedom.

  • French finaly recognize that Haiti is free and they fine them with a debt of 90 million Francs.

  • Debt is finaly all paid off and Haiti is a independant country.
