    Introduction

Anthonio Johnson comes to colonial Virginia as an indentured servant. He fell in love with another indentured servant and her name was Maria. He became a free man and soon enough, so did the love of his life become free. They got married and had four wonderful children. Anthony, his new name, acquired land, livestock, and a slave. Anthony had great progress for his life, but that ended for his sons.

    Diminishing Progress

This time is a depressing time in history when Africans or African descents are not treated equally.
  • Anthony Johnson acquires land, slaves, and livestock

Anthony Johnson acquires land, slaves, and livestock
Anthony Johnson, a negro, has acquired land, slaves/labor, and livestock during the 1650s. He has now become more like a regular landowner. Anthony Johnson can help his family by giving them crops to eat and having money to use. He is very lucky right now because he can control his time, unlike his sons. This is showing progress for Anthony Johnson.
  • Anthony Johnson wins his case against an Englishman.

Anthony Johnson wins his case against an Englishman.
After Mr. Robert Parker, an Englishman, takes Anthony Johnson's slave, John Casar, Anthony wants to go to court. He wanted to win his slave, for it was rightfully his in the first place. Sam'll Goldsmyth, Anthony's friend, helps Anthony win the case over an Englishman. At the end, Anthony is very pleased because he won his slave back. This event is important because this shows that blacks can be equal to whites in this time period. This event is also showing progress for Anthony Johnson.
  • Slaves can not become free if they are baptized

Slaves can not become free if they are baptized
Before, the Siete Partidas laws said that if a slave was baptized , they could become free. This law specifically states that if you are a slave and become baptized you can not become free. Even though you can't become free, the landowners highly recommend getting baptized. This law is important because there can be no way out of slavery. There is also no hope for the slaves to come out of slavery and be free. This event is showing diminishing progress for the first time.
  • Casual killing of slaves Part 1

Casual killing of slaves Part 1
If a slave was not doing his/her work properly, the master was allowed to punish the slave by hitting them. If the master hit too hard, the slave might get killed and that was allowed to be done. If the master had purposefully murdered the slave, then he would go to court. The makers of this law are trying to make the slaves so scared that make them want to never try to rebel at their master. This event is important because this is the first time slaves are mentioned as property, not humans.
  • Part 2 of Casual Killing of Slaves

Part 2 of Casual Killing of Slaves
This event shows diminishing progress for slaves in this time period.
  • Slaves are Considered just Property

    Slaves are Considered just Property
Slaves used to be considered real people that worked for you. Now, they are considered the owner's property. The owner can do anything to the "property" to make them do work. Now that this event has happened, the slaves' value as humans has decreased even though the Englishmen are very dependent on them as property or cheap labor. This event is very important because this event leads up to the point in history that we know of. This event shows diminishing progress.
  • Conclusion Part 2

    Conclusion Part 2
During this mysterious part in history, there are events that lead up to the time in history that we have heard of. Now that you have read this timeline, your mind has completed the entire timeline of history events.
  • Conclusion Part 1

    Conclusion Part 1
When you began this timeline, you had a piece in history missing in your mind. That time in history is actually very interesting if you read about it. We all used to think that slaves were brought over here already property. What you didn't know is that Africans or African descents were equal to Englishmen if they were baptized or were free. That time in history is something you don't usually learn about because it is so confusing to us and historians in the beginning.
