Generation of Computers (word1,6hour,group2)

  • ENIAC Was Completed

    ENIAC Was Completed
The worlds first large-scale general purpose computer was called "Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator" was completed by John Mauchley and J. Eckert.
  • Period: to

    First Generation Computers

The computers during the first generaton could only solve one problem at a time. Paper punch cards and tape were used for input and the out put was printed on paper. Vacuumn tubes were used to build these computers. They were made for business. Eckert and Mauchly completed the first commercial computer in the USA. These computers were as big as an entire room.
  • UNIVAC Was Released

    UNIVAC Was Released
Universal Automatic Computer was released. It was built for the US Census Bureau.
  • UNIVAC Was Used In 1952 Presidential Election

UNIVAC Was Used In 1952 Presidential Election
The UNIVAC was used to count votes in the 1952 presidential election between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson.
  • Period: to

    Second Generation of Computers

The second generation computers were physically smaller, less expensive, more powerful, more energy efficient, and more reliable than the first generation computers. Programs and data were input on punch cards and magnetic tape. The output was on punch cards and paper printouts. Magnetic tape was used for storage. Magnetic hard drives and programing language such as FORTRAN, "Formula Translator/Translation," and "Common Business Oriented Language," were developed and used during this time.
  • Transitor Replaces Vaccum Tubes

    Transitor Replaces Vaccum Tubes
The second generations computers were mainly made of transitors which replaced the first generation vaccum tubes. THe transitor is a device composed of semiconductor material that amplifies a signal or opens or closes a circuit. They were not used in most computers till the late 1950's. The transitors did tons of positive things for the second generation computers.
  • COBOL Language is Used in Second Generation Computers

COBOL Language is Used in Second Generation Computers
The COBOL computer language invented in 1959 by Grace Hopper was used in the second generation computer.
  • Period: to

    Third Generation of Computers

The main technology used to make these computers was integrated circuits. They used the IBM system and the 360 mainframe. The computers were even smaller than the past and a lot more reliable.
  • Integrated Circuits were Developed

    Integrated Circuits were Developed
Integrated circuits were developed and were the main focus of this generation of computers. Integrated circuits was one of the main things used to make third generation computers.
  • Period: to

    Fourth Generation Computers

This generation of computers include the original IBM PC and Apple Macintosh computers, and today's modern computers. During this time the invention of the microprocessor took placce. Also core processing capabilities on one single chip was made possible.
  • Microprocessor was Invented

    Microprocessor was Invented
The microprocesser had the main computer funcitons on one single integrated circuits.
  • First Macintosh Computer Released

    First Macintosh Computer Released
The first apple macintosh computer was invented by Steve Jobs who released in 1984.
  • Iphone 4s is Released

    Iphone 4s is Released
The Iphone 4s was made by the apple company and it uses Siri which is an application that you talk to and it thinks and does things on its own.
  • Windows 8 is Invented

    Windows 8 is Invented
Windows 8 is a program for computers that is even more advanced then the past and most software is updated.
  • IPhone 5 is Released

    IPhone 5 is Released
The Iphone 5 is just the beginning of many more iphones and apple devices in the fith generation of computers. It has 3d maps and many more amazing features.
  • Period: to

    Fifth Generation Computers

The computers during this generation will be based on artificial intelligence which allows them to think, reason, and learn on their own. Voice and touch are expected to be the main input. They will be constructed to be a form of optical computers that process data using light instead of electrons. These computers are expected to be tiny computers that utilize nanotechnology. There will be general purpose computers built into desks, home appliances, and other everyday devices.
