  • Estates General Convene

    The Estates General meet for the first time since 1614 to discuss the financial crisis in France.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    The Third Estate is locked out of the Eststes General, so they sit in a nearby handball (tennis) court until a new constituion was written. It eventually worked.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    The infamous prison, the Bastille, was overtaken by a mob of people and raided for its gunpowder.
  • Great Fear

    The Great Fear sweeps across France. Peasants thought the nobles were going to attack them, so they launched a preemptive strike against the nobles by burning down houses and legal documents.
  • Signing of the Declaration of the Rights of Man

    The Declaration of the Rights of Man was signed on this day. It's main statement was "men are born and remain free and equal in rights."
  • Women's March to Versailles

    Women riot over the price of bread prices. they go to Versailles demanding grain, and when the king's court denies them, the women raid the palace and take the king and queen back to paris.
  • Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette flee

    The royal family attempts to flee to Varennes. They are caught near the boarder and brought back to Paris.
  • Constitution of 1971

    King Louis XVI is forced to sign a document that basically removes all of his power.
  • Brunswick Manifesto

    The Duke of Brunswick wrote a document saying that Paris would be destroyed if the royal family was harmed.
  • National Convention

    The people of France created the National Convention abolished the monarchy and created a republic.
  • The Terror

    The Jacobin Club institute terror by executing anybody who could possibly be a traitor.

    The Directory was the form of government that went after the National Convention

    The famous French Genreral, Napoleon, takes over the French government in a coup de'etat.

    On this day, there was a signed document between Napoleon and the Pope that reinstates the Catholic Church in France.

    The code forbade privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that government jobs go to the most qualified.

    France sells part of North America to the Americans.

    Napoleon crowns himself emperor, showing his power over the Church.

    This was an important naval battle fought between the British Navy and French Navy.

    This was a war between France and the allied powers of Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal for control of the Iberian Peninsula.
  • French Invasion of Russia

    France invades Russia and is severly crippled after their loss to the Russians.
  • Exile to Elba

    After retreating from Russia, Napoleon offered to step down and let his son take over. The people denied him, so he abdicated his throne and left for Elba.
  • Battle of Waterloo

    Napoleon comes back from Elba, only to lose the Battle of Waterloo and be forced into exile once again.
  • Exile to St. Helena

    Napoleon, after losing the Battle of Waterloo, leaves for St. Helena where he ives out the rest of his days.
