The Supreme Court of the United States ruled in the case of Abington School District vs. Schempp that laws requiring the recitation of the Lord's Prayer or Bible verses in public schools is unconstitutional. The vote was 8 to 1. Students could no longer able to praise the Lord in school.

Takeover
Communist forces complete their takeover of South Vietnam, forcing the evacuation from Saigon of civilians from the United States and the unconditional surrender of South Vietnam. -
Back to Panama
The United States Senate vote to return the Panama Canal to Panama on December 31, 1999. The treaty for the return had been signed on September 7 of the previous year, with approval pending by the U.S. Congress. -

Congress passed the holiday legislation, which was then signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. His birthday is on January 15th. Since its too close to Christmas, it is celebrated on the 3rd Monday of January. -
